REEL Paper 5 is a developing reel that holds RA-4 colour paper, black & white paper, or large format sheet film up to 8x10 inches inside a Paterson Multi-Reel 5 or 8 tank. It lets you make colour prints or process big sheet film in a closed tank, without setting out trays or a print drum.

Overview

The reel fits the Paterson Multi-Reel 5 (PTP117) and Multi-Reel 8 (PTP118) — Paterson 5 tanks and larger — and smaller tanks will not take it. Vintage Visual suggests using the smaller of the two tanks where you can, to keep chemistry volumes down: with the AGO Film Processor's rotary (roll) agitation the manufacturer's chart gives a minimum of 250ml in a PTP117 and 400ml in a PTP118. AGO does not heat the chemistry — you bring it up to temperature yourself and AGO adjusts the development time as the temperature drifts. That time compensation is active only in rotary mode; in vertical (stick) agitation the temperature probe does not sit in the liquid, so compensation is switched off. Paper and film are loaded onto the reel in the dark, and once the tank is closed the rest of the process happens in room light. For 5x7 material the separate REEL 5x7 fits inside the Paper 5 to guide the sheet, and for RA-4 paper larger than 8x10 — up to 12x16 inch (30x40cm) — Vintage Visual lists the REEL Paper 8. When processing film the reel is not compatible with staining developers. The Paterson tank and the AGO Film Processor are sold separately.

Common questions

Questions about this product

Are enlarger lens boards and negative carriers interchangeable?

No — they are specific to the enlarger maker and model. Check the compatibility notes in each product's specifications, or contact us with your enlarger model before ordering.

How do I choose a darkroom timer?

For enlarging, second-precision exposure control matters most. For film and print processing, a timer that can step through multiple stages is the practical choice.
